What’s the best martial art for my child to learn confidence? What’s the best martial art for self-defense? Whats the best martial art for women? What’s the best martial art for MMA? What’s the best martial art for….
To be frank and honest there is NO best martial art! Let me explain! Almost all martial arts these days are a blend of many things with a specialty in something. Brazilian JiuJitsu specializes in grappling but also contains some striking. Krav Maga has some grappling but specializes in practical self-defense. Karate specializes in striking but also contains self-defense and a some grappling.
So the real question becomes which is the Best Martial Art or Martial Arts School for me? This inherently leads to more questions. Why do I want to study martial arts? To be healthier? Lose weight? Practical Self-Defense? What do I want my child to get out of martial arts training? Confidence, Bully-Proof, Leadership, Self Defense? All will be factors in where you should begin your martial arts journey!
Once you’ve identified some basic ideas of why you want to learn martial arts. The next step is to see what’s available in the area where you live or work. Do the reviews describe a place you or your child would be comfortable and welcome?
The next step is watching or trying a class! How clean is the facility? Does it smell like a locker room or a clean space? How do they treat you, your student, and the other members on the floor? Is the staff friendly and welcoming? Did you like what you experienced in class? (There should always be an opportunity to try a class!) At Premier we typically offer a 2 week free trial!
Notice we haven’t even considered style or cost yet? In our experience Style comes second to a great teacher, third to a clean safe school, and price comes last. A professional teacher can make or break your martial arts experience. At Premier Martial Arts all of our instructors are full time professionally educated adults. This is their mission in life! Its not a side hustle, nor do we switch instructors often.
So you love the place and the instructor but what about the style? Will it meet your personal reasons for studying martial arts? If exercise is your goal. Anything that gets your body moving will meet that need. If being an MMA Cage fighter is your goal then you’ll want more of an MMA gym rather than a Martial Arts Style (Karate, JiuJitsu, Judo, TaeKownDo, etc). If self defense is your goal talk to the teaching staff about what they have to offer on this front. At Premier Martial Arts we draw from several disciplines to provide a well rounded self-defense system. This includes: Krav Maga, Kick Boxing, Grappling, Kali, and Karate.
Now you found a place you like, and a teacher you love what’s next? Typically the next step is an enrollment conference to discuss whatever programs and pricing is available. Most professional schools use a membership of some sort. Term and tuition vary by Martial Arts School. What other fees are there? Do you have to buy equipment? Uniform, gear, etc? Do you to pay for belt testing? At Premier Martial Arts Fort Wayne your first set of equipment is provided, and there is no charge for belt testing. We do offer other services such as Parents Night Outs, Summer Camps, and Day Camps you can purchase if desired but they are not required.
As you can see there is more to consider than what style should I learn? You should also understand your success in any martial arts style or system will be directly impacted by often you train! More training isn’t always better as your body needs recuperation time and rest! But consistency is the key to improving!

In 2019 he made the decision to operate his Martial Arts School fulltime which has always been his lifelong dream. That one location has grown to three in the City of Fort Wayne.
Master Ron Kuhn is married to his wife Anita (retired Special Needs Teacher) of 30 years. They have three wonderful daughters, Jordan, Ally and Katie. Jordan is a nurse who lives in Indianapolis. Ally has a computer science and business background and works with her dad at Premier Martial Arts. Katie is Chemical Engineering graduate and works in the pharmaceutical industry in Indianapolis.
