New Year, New Year Transformation Plan
Many people set the goal for a healthier new year. It usually consists of a weight loss, and exercise goal along with adopting other healthy habits. When they come in the form of New Year’s resolutions most people tend to fail for a number of reasons. They have no real plan, or they make to many changes to fast, or they don’t give the new habits the 6-8 weeks it takes for a habit to be adopted. Below are some tips and tricks to help you reach your goals:
- Start small with realistic goals. Too much change to fast is a recipe for failure! How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.
- Know that change is hard and you will struggle in the beginning.
- Set short, medium and long term goals. (Weekly, Quarterly, and Annual)
- Engage professionals when needed. If your goal is to be healthier and lose weight it maybe necessary to speak to your doctor, work with a trainer, speak to a dietician, or join a fitness facility. At a minimum spend time doing research on what you’re trying to accomplish.
- Create a schedule that works with your life and stick to it! The days you don’t feel like doing it, are the days you need it most! Discipline is always better than motivation. You won’t always be motivated. This is when discipline is important.
- Encourage others in your house to take up the same healthy habits you are. Whether that be diet or exercise related. Its easier to stay on plan if your entire house hold is participating.
- For weight loss goals take an inventory of what you consume. Eating habits have more impact on weight loss than exercise. Although exercise is a vital component of being healthy. Look for and eliminate unnecessary, or empty calories. Avoid high calorie low nutrition meals.
- Be honest with yourself. Set backs will happen for everyone. Accept them and move on!
- Avoid fad diets without speaking to your doctor.
- When it comes to a new exercise routine start small and work towards increasing intensity and duration of workouts. Too quick too fast is a recipe for injury, soreness, and failure.
- Include stretching in your fitness plan. Mobility is extremely important especially as we age, and if you have a sedatary job or life style.
- Quick weight loss is probably not your healthiest option. The most important part of achieving your goals is to make changes that you can live with. Losing weight and then moving back to a less healthy life style will result in relapse and weight gain.
- What get’s measured, gets done! While the numbers are less important than how you feel, keeping track of certain metrics will help you evaluate progress. It will also help you adjust your training and eating plans.
- Have fun! Don’t starve yourself! Don’t workout so hard you can’t walk or are in pain for days. Find a plan you can live with and activity you enjoy!
