How Do The Belts Work At Premier Martial Arts Fort Wayne?
Belts are always earned, and never given or purchased. Below Black Belt testing happens every 3-6 months depending on the student, their program and their current belt level. Younger students in our Tiny Champs or Little Champs Program have a few more belts on their way to Black Belt to help them mature and learn at an appropriate pace for their ages.
Colored belts are broken into Novice, Intermediate and Advanced. This is determined by their Kyu/Gup rank which is the number of belts away from Black Belt. Using this number designation also helps in sport martial arts where different school and styles may have their belt colors in different orders. Using a Kyu/Gup rank allows competitors with a similar experience level to compete with each other.

Kids have to earn 6 stripes to be eligible to test. Its possible to earn 2 stripes per month. One stripe is for their Black Belt Excellence homework based on our personal development curriculum. These topics include: Student Creed, Honesty, Nutrition, Integrity, etc. This homework also leads our in class mat chats on the subject. There is one subject each month. Their second stripe is for drill for skills. Drill for skills are physical skills that go along with our curriculum this quarter. Some examples are: speed, power, accuracy, etc.
Once a student has earned their stripes they will receive an invitation to a belt test. Kids belt tests are held on Saturday mornings and are broken up by age and experience levels. All 5-7 Year olds test together. 8-12 Year olds white thru green belt test together and brown thru Red 2 test together. We do not charge for belt testing. Tests are typically held in an elementary school gymnasium. Currently we use Eel River Elementary where all three Fort Wayne Premier Schools can come together in a single location.

Premier Martial Arts Fort Wayne founded in 2015 by 6th Degree Black Belt and Master Instructor Ron Kuhn. Master Kuhn had a distinguished management & engineering career working for such companies as Verizon, NIPSCO, Frontier Communications and Mediacom. In 2019 he made the decision to operate his Martial Arts School fulltime which has always been his lifelong dream. That one location has grown to three in the City of Fort Wayne.
Master Ron Kuhn is married to his wife Anita (retired Special Needs Teacher) of 30 years. They have three wonderful daughters, Jordan, Ally and Katie. Jordan is a nurse who lives in Indianapolis. Ally has a computer science and business background and works with her dad at Premier Martial Arts. Katie is Chemical Engineering graduate and works in the pharmaceutical industry in Indianapolis.
