Building Confidence in Children
One of the benefits of Martial Arts training should be improved confidence. This happens in some martial arts school and other activities by accident. At Premier Martial Arts its by design!
Building confidence at our school starts the moment the student walks through the door and is greeted by name by our staff! What does everyone’s favorite thing to hear? Their own name. We actively work to learn about and get to know our members because we are a giant extended family. This in itself plants the seed of confidence in our members and their families. They know we care!
Second is our class structure. Every student gets feedback in every class. This includes both positive feedback and things to improve. We use the sandwich model. Compliment, Correction, Compliment, and typically in a person to person environment. There are always things that need to be improved but what’s more important many times is what the student is doing correctly. Many times helping a student improve is adjusting the way we practice or describe the activity so the student better understands.
Next is culture. Failure IS a huge part of learning! We learn much more by failing than by always winning. We use failure as an opportunity to grow and learn verse something to be chastised or penalized for. When a child struggles we use that as an opportunity to discuss what could be or could have been done differently. A poor grade in math may mean some tutoring to help better understand the topic, or maybe it was poor judgment. Spending too much time playing video games and not enough time studying. In this case we would discuss: Doing First Things First! Either way it’s a chance to learn and improve.
The next piece of the confidence puzzle is our rotating curriculum. This means we all work on the same topics and techniques but a different levels. A novice student learns a more basic version, while an experience student pushes themselves with something more complicated. Both students get to stretch and push themselves based on their own ability and experience. This allows for confidence to be gained and improvements to be made at their own pace.
Finally the ability to earn new stripes, and new belts help cement to the student that they are in fact improving. Which goes a long way towards making them feel good about themselves and the work they’ve done. Watching students earn new belts and seeing that pride and confidence is the best part of our jobs!
